May 5, 2025 (press release) –
Good evening. It is a pleasure to be back here in Barcelona, at the invitation of the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa. I believe that the European institutions must be close to its citizens and regions. This is an opportunity to visit Spain, now a major economic driver in Europe, and in particular, Catalonia, its most dynamic region. And now that it is returning to stability, it is demonstrating strong leadership of this twin transition.
Today, I had the opportunity to visit SEAT, a major company in the automotive sector, which is leading the shift towards electric cars, a change that is crucial for sustainable mobility. Tomorrow I will be visiting the Barcelona Super Computing Center, which is already one of the most powerful computing centres. It is introducing quantum computing and very recently was selected as one of the new AI factories. It is a very powerful institution for supporting start-ups and the most innovative companies in the region. And of course, it is also an opportunity to work with the Generalitat and take part in a meeting of the Cercle d’Economia. I am therefore delighted to be here. And, as always, it has been a very warm visit, despite the rain.
