May 5, 2025 (press release) –
LENEXA, KAN. (MAY 5, 2025) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a cost recovery settlement with private settling parties and settling federal agencies to recover $2.4 million for cleanup work performed by EPA Region 7’s Superfund program.
“EPA Region 7 is committed to cleaning up sites across the region to ensure that residents of our nation’s Heartland have access to clean air, clean land, and clean water,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy. “Our Superfund team, in coordination with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Department of Justice, worked diligently to investigate the source of waste in Berger and ensure that the polluter paid for the work performed by EPA.”
Between 2018 and 2019, EPA Region 7 performed work at the U.S. Technology Superfund Site in Berger, Missouri, to remove 13 million pounds of hazardous waste that had been transported to the site illegally by U.S. Technology Corporation from the Hydromex site in Yazoo City, Mississippi, as well as multiple storage facilities in Arkansas, Georgia, Ohio, and Utah.
The waste consisted of “spent blast media” that contained toxic levels of heavy metals, such as cadmium, chromium, and lead, that was generated by U.S. Technology’s customers in the aerospace and defense industries. These customers included the settling parties and agencies, namely AAR Landing Gear, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Space Gateway Support, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Coast Guard, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
