Since its establishment in 1974, the Viana Mill has transformed from a modest operation into a leader in sustainable packaging.

Initially founded with a capacity of 136,000 tonnes per year, the mill has undergone significant modernisation throughout the years, and has a production capacity today of 440,000 tonnes.

In 2024, Viana Paper Mill celebrated 50 years of papermaking and we saw the results from recent investments coming into fruition. including equipping the mill with some of the most advanced papermaking technologies and helping reduce CO2 emissions by 11,000 tonnes a year.

The mill's modernisation was complemented by an ambitious €145 million investment initiative launched in 2023, the largest in its history.

Refurbishment of Paper Machine 4

The latest milestone, the refurbishment of Paper Machine 4 (PM4), was completed in October 2023. The PM4's reconstruction has elevated the mill’s production capability, while simultaneously enhancing operational efficiency. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, this upgrade includes alterations to the formation and press sections, significantly improving the mill’s agility in the face of a rapidly evolving market.

A critical aspect of the PM4 renovation is its alignment with DS Smith’s overarching mission of fostering a low-carbon, circular economy. The incorporation of the new NipcoFlex Tandem press has yielded impressive outcomes: A 15% reduction in steam consumption and significant reduction in paper breaks during production, enhancing productivity greatly.

New recovery boiler

By implementing a new recovery boiler slated for completion by early 2025, Viana will improve steam efficiency by 25% and reduce air emissions, bringing us closer to DS Smith’s pledge to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.

With a longstanding reputation as a market leader in Southern Europe, Viana Paper Mill has been at the forefront of recycling. Its considerable export capacity—around 90%—demonstrates the mill's importance not just locally, but globally.

As we enter a new chapter of operations in a world increasingly leaning towards sustainability, the focus on innovation, adaptability, and sustainable practices remains unwavering. The continued development of PM4 will enable the mill to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions, including innovative papers tailored to customer needs.
