By cleaning the air, capturing and storing carbon, and providing habitat for wildlife, trees play a vital role in preserving our environment. In the global fight against climate change, our vast forests are our best allies.
Today, the Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, accompanied by Marc Serré, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, as well as Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament of Sudbury, announced two investments as part of the program 2 billion trees: an amount of $200,000 is paid to the City of Greater Sudbury with a view to planting 200,000 trees by 2027 and an amount of $300,000 is paid to the Canadian Association of Forest Nurseries (ACPF) in order to increase the skilled workforce in the forest nursery sector.
Funding provided to the City of Greater Sudbury will help rehabilitate lands that have been historically impacted by industrial activity and support the recovery and self-sustainability of native terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Proper preparation is essential to successful tree planting.
These trees will create new green and healthy spaces, in addition to providing habitat and food sources for birds and other animals. They will also capture carbon, which will clean the air and environment in Greater Sudbury.
Funding to ACPF will help support nurseries and improve tree production through the development of institutional training programs aimed at increasing the highly skilled workforce at the heart of the supply chain forest nurseries. This investment will help meet the growing demand for workers in the industry. These skilled workers will be able to ensure that tree planting meets environmental sustainability best practices, through a combination of classroom training and practical field experience. Canada expects benefits to the local community, participants and the environment in general.
Planting under the 2 Billion Trees program was supported by Forests Ontario, whose work has focused on restoring, maintaining and growing forest landscapes in hundreds of sites across Ontario and Canada in spring 2024.
Planting two billion trees is a marathon, not a sprint: you have to plan everything carefully and cultivate the seedlings in a nursery. This effort requires collaboration with different levels of government, non-governmental organizations and Indigenous groups. It also requires a thoughtful approach at each stage of the supply chain, from the seed stage to the planting of seedlings. More trees mean cleaner air, healthier communities and better carbon sequestration across Canada.
