LOS ANGELES , May 19, 2022 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) –

Canada-based sustainable textile producer Vegeto recently announced it created a new nonwoven for thermal insulation made with natural, plant-sourced materials, Nonwovens Industry reported on May 17.

The nonwoven is composed of a biopolymer and plant-based fiber blend. The biopolymer is made by combining starch and sugarcane. The fibers come from kapok and milkweed, with the latter offering many of the nonwoven’s benefits.

Milkweed naturally produces a sap that is toxic to most insects, so the company does not need to use pesticides on its milkweed crops, even when growing outdoors. Additionally, milkweed fibers are inherently hydrophobic, just like many petroleum-based fibers.

The company says its thermally insulating nonwoven can be used in a variety of products, such as sleeping bags, gloves, and coats.
