LOS ANGELES , September 9, 2022 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) –

California’s legislature has approved SB 1215, a bill which implements a point-of-sale fee for electronics which contain batteries that cannot be easily removed, Resource Recycling reported on Sept. 7.

Consumers who purchase such devices will be charged the fee upon the point-of-sale. The fee will cover costs for handling the e-waste for proper disposal, including separation and sorting for recycling.

SB 1215 covers a wide range of electronics, including medical devices, energy storage systems and vaping devices. 

The bill currently awaits Gov. Newsom’s signature. If signed into law, the bill takes effect Jan. 1, 2026.
