We keep it rollin´ – Roll manufacturing at Niefern

Know-how in production is an important key to success at Bellmer – especially with a view to ever shorter project processing times and high quality standards. Bellmer also focuses on quality in the field of rolls. Our qualified personnel are always quality-conscious and thus ensure the high standard of our products, while spacious and newly built warehouses and assembly halls in the immediate vicinity of the company ensure appropriate production capacities. Short distances enable us to produce quickly and flexibly. Roll manufacturing has been located in Plant 3 in Enzberg since 2012.

Short facts:

  • The 22-strong team produces around 850 rolls per year
  • More than 8,000 rolls have already been processed here
  • Production of new rolls, as well as overhaul & maintenance of customer rolls
  • Sizes from 100 mm to 1300 mm Ø
  • Use in the Paper Technology & Separation Technology division
  • Each roll is manufactured according to order specifications

1. Delivery &  Preparation

In the first step, the delivered pipes are unloaded, assigned to the corresponding orders and then checked.
This is followed by preparation and mechanical processing of the pipe materials in the form of overturning and internal turning.

2. Welding Shop – things get hot here

In this work step, the various components of the individual rolls are joined together. The tubes are thermally expanded by heating them with a gas ring burner so that the base prefabricated in the small turning shop can be inserted. Finally, the roll parts are welded together.

3. Turning  Shop – the real all-Rounder

The tubes are cut to finished length in the lathe. The rolls are also prepared for further processing in the CNC machines by cutting to length and centering. The lathe can also be used for the production of individual parts thanks to its wide range of applications.

4. Balancing – Everything in Order

Slight asymmetrical mass distributions can occur due to manufacturing tolerances. As with car tires, these imbalances lead to vibrations and increased wear. It is therefore very important to eliminate the imbalance. Based on preliminary measurements, balancing weights are inserted into the open tubes using balancing stars. After closing and finishing on the lathes, the roll is checked again. Balancing is then carried out by drilling out and inserting additional weight rods in the bottom of the roll or in the balancing stars.

5. Large and small lathes – with an eye for detail

In the large turning shop, mainly large roll tubes are machined and finished – up to 18 tons. A total of six machines are operated in the Bellmer small turning shop – five of which are CNC machines.
