Australia’s Minister responsible for forest industries, Senator The Hon Murray Watt has declared the sector has “a huge role to play” in Australia’s emissions reduction task. The Minister’s remarks came in a broader speech on Australia’s agriculture sector to the National Rural Press Club in Canberra today.
“All of us who work across forest industries know the great work our sector does harnessing carbon from the atmosphere and locking it into essential and renewable timber and fibre products. It was good to hear Minister Watt formally acknowledge this, and the opportunities for the sector with respect to Australia’s emissions reduction,” Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA) Chief Executive Officer, Ross Hampton said.
Minister Watt’s remarks on forestry during his Press Club address today:
“Of course, the forestry industry has a huge role to play in our emissions reduction task. If we get the right investment framework and the right regulation we can create the carbon sinks that we’ll need to help remove carbon from our atmosphere. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity and I’m really looking forward to working with all in the sector to realise it.”
“We welcome Minister Watt’s comments and reciprocate the offer to work with him and the broader Albanese Government to ensure forest industries can contribute as much as possible in the fight against climate change,” Ross Hampton concluded.
