In The Spotlight: Atenea Morales

Atenea Morales, Executive Digital Editor at Vogue Mexico & Latin America, rose from intern to lead the brand’s digital platforms, driven by a lifelong passion for Vogue. Inspired by Mexico City’s rich culture, she channels its energy into her work, connecting fashion with broader cultural narratives. Vogue’s Day of the Dead Gala, a vivid tribute to Mexican heritage, captures this spirit, celebrating life, memory, and tradition.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you find your way to Condé Nast?

I started my journey in media very young, beginning as an intern at Vogue Mexico. From there, I worked my way up, and now, almost eight years later, I’m the Executive Editor overseeing Vogue Mexico’s digital platforms. It’s been a thrilling ride! I believe the key in this industry is patience, a strong work ethic, and balancing personal life with professional drive. Every step has taught me something invaluable, and I’m as passionate today as I was on day one.

Would your 10-year-old self be surprised by where you are now?

Yes and no! Since I was young, I dreamed of being an editor at Vogue. This role was always the goal, and I worked hard to make it real. But even with that ambition, I’m continually amazed by the scope and impact of this opportunity. I still remember my excitement at joining Vogue as a university student—it was surreal! Nearly eight years on, I still feel that thrill and gratitude every day.

Which part of your job would surprise others the most?

Probably the sheer influence and reach of the Vogue brand and platforms. Many people don’t realize that Vogue connects the worlds of fashion, culture, architecture, art, beauty, sports, and more. It’s about constantly intertwining these influences, highlighting how interconnected they are. It’s a unique privilege to work at the intersection of all these worlds. After all, what’s in Vogue is often the precursor to what’s in fashion.

Do you think Mexico City, your hometown, influences the work you do at Vogue every day?

Absolutely! Mexico City, with its vibrant, multicultural energy, is a constant inspiration. Vogue Mexico draws from the rich cultures of both Mexico and Latin America, and Mexico City is at the heart of that. This city’s dynamic art, food, music, and social scenes constantly offer something new - a concert, an exhibit, a restaurant, an installation. We’re always on the lookout for ways to showcase and celebrate these cultural expressions through our work at Vogue.

How would you describe Vogue’s Day of the Dead Gala?

The Day of the Dead Gala is a powerful tribute to Mexican culture, especially our view on life and death. For Mexicans, death isn’t something to fear; it’s a bridge to our loved ones who remain with us in spirit. The Gala is a vivid, colorful celebration of this beautiful tradition—a uniquely Mexican perspective that Vogue captures in a way that’s visually stunning, heartfelt, and true to our heritage.
