As the conflict in Ukraine escalates, a potential gas embargo against Russia, as well as Russia’s loss of access to international banking, may threaten Italy’s paper industry, said Assocarta’s managing director, Massimo Medugno, Euwid reported on Mar. 1.
Gas prices are already incredibly high in Italy and throughout Europe. The EU is also dependent on gas imports from Russia, so an embargo would exacerbate gas access and costs.
Medugno said Italy has options for sourcing gas elsewhere. Those options include imports via the Trans Adriatic, Algerian, and Libyan pipelines from the south. Coal power is another emergency option, though it is not ideal.
