Aluminium packaging recycling organisation Alupro believes the UK Deposit Management Organisation will be a “great next step” to boost circularity.
Tom Giddings
, executive director of Alupro, was encouraged by the government’s decision to appoint the DMPO to operate the new Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for single-use plastic and metal drinks containers in
England
,
Scotland
and
Northern Ireland
.
Giddings said: “The DMO appointment is a great next step towards the operational launch of DRS in the
UK
. DRS presents a great opportunity to capitalise on the progress industry has made so far in increasing beverage can recycling rates through programmes such as Every Can Counts, whilst securing a high-quality stream of valuable aluminium material for recycling.
“Alupro look forward to working alongside the DMO to scale and deliver a
UK
-focused DRS that helps to increase the capture and recycling rates of beverage packaging.”
Industry reaction has been broadly positive to the new DMO. However,
Jim Bligh
, director of corporate affairs and packaging at
The Food and Drink Federation
, was disappointed that
Wales
remained outside the DRS.
Elise Seibold
, chief operating officer at Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I, urged collaboration to ensure the scheme works for consumers, drinks producers and retailers.
