May 8
(EUROPA PRESS) - Air traffic between
Spain
and
the United States
grew by 1.9% in the first quarter compared to the same period of 2024, to 904,937 passengers, amid trade and tariff tensions initiated by the North American country,
Donald Trump
, which has caused a scenario of a global uncertainty.
Moreover, despite last year's Easter, which was brought forward and took place in March, a month earlier, there has been an increase in flights between the two countries. Nevertheless, Aena's airports reached 5% more passengers in the first three months, with a record March.
In fact, the
Spanish airport
operator recently stated that it maintains its forecast of 3.4% growth in its network in
Spain
during 2025, reaching almost 320 million air travelers.
By airlines, Iberia was the company that transported the most passengers in this corridor, with 347,774, 5.6% more than a year earlier. They were followed by
American Airlines
, with 271,273 passengers (-6.42%), the only one to fall in traffic;
Delta
, with 124,602 (+3.3%); and United, with 100,523 (+11.4%); as well as
Air Europa
, with 58,878 (+2.6%).
After presenting their respective quarterly accounts,
American Airlines
withdrew its profit forecasts for the full year due to the risk of a slump in demand as a result of economic uncertainty.
The same line has been followed by fellow carrier
Delta Airlines
, facing the remainder of 2025 with a flat growth forecast, in line with the expected drop in demand following new economic policies and Trump's tariffs.
According to recent IATA data,
U.S.
airlines have now posted two consecutive months of declining passenger demand with a 0.1% drop in March from a year earlier, along with a 1.5% decline in February.
In mid-April, the Minister of Industry and Tourism,
Jordi Hereu
, said that the decline in tourism demand from
Spain
to
the United States
, as recorded in the data of the travel agency employers' associations, is still "provisional".
"There is a first reaction, but it is not yet a category of decline. Therefore, we will have to see the trend," he explained during a press conference after the
Council of Ministers
.
