A.P. Møller-Mærsk, Denmark's leading industrial group and owner of one of the world's largest shipping lines, on Thursday downgraded shipping growth forecasts for this year due to increased geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
The Danish group, owner of Maersk Line - one of the world's leading container shipping companies - now estimates for that market a range from a 1 percent drop to a 4 percent rise, when earlier this year it was forecasting 4 percent growth in 2025.
"The outlook for global container demand for the remainder of the year remains highly uncertain, due to rapidly evolving trade policies and increased risks of recession in the United States," the company says in its balance sheet presented today.
If Chinese exporters redirect lost exports to other markets, "a protectionist response could follow, with the risk of a broader trade war," it writes.
A.P. Møller-Mærsk expects positive growth in the second quarter "if shippers capitalize on the 90-day pause in reciprocal tariffs by making early distributions of their cargoes and building inventories."
In the final stretch of the year there is a "growing" risk of contraction in demand, but also the possibility of a rebound in trade if the tariffs are removed, the company notes.
The Danish firm presented a net profit of 1,207 million dollars (1,064 million euros) in the first quarter, almost six times more than a year ago, due to high freight rates, cost control in all segments and higher volumes.
