May 20, 2022 (press release) –

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has awarded AFRY an assignment to deliver a digital solution, based on AFRY’s digital system platform, integrated with internal product logistics systems for its Husum mill in Sweden.

Metsä Board’s Husum mill in Sweden is an integrated board and pulp mill producing folding boxboard, uncoated white kraftliner and bleached chemical pulp. Due to increased demand for sustainably produced packaging materials, the Husum mill is now increasing its capacity and upgrading to a higher level of energy efficiency. This upgrade also requires a new, modern digital system to take care of the product transfers from the board machine to upcoming production phases.

AFRY will deliver a modern Industry 4.0 digital solution based on the AFRY platform. The advanced solution will act as the data information hub, directing the assigned logistics devices from the board machine to the planned destination. The solution will have integration with logistics systems that control the production flow and communicate with other systems, like automated vehicles and cranes, to convey the roles.

“It is important for us to have a reliable and modern system that supports our new production process. The system needs to understand our production process variables and integrate them with data from other digital systems. Therefore, we have chosen AFRY as the supplier of a simulation study and requirement specification as well as the actual implementation of the solution.”, says Daniel Nordkvist, Process Manager, Metsä Board Husum.

“We continue our deep co-operation with the Husum mill in this sustainable packaging material capacity increase project by expanding the capabilities of the production with modern digitalisation tools. We are proud to deliver this critical and advanced manufacturing execution system solution, based on the AFRY System platform, to Metsä Board Husum.”, says David Andersson, Business Segment Manager Digitalisation at AFRY Process Industries in Sweden.

The new digital system will be installed by autumn 2023.
