NEW YORK , May 29, 2013 (press release) – Media forecast and research firm Simba Information has released the 2013 edition of Trends in Digital and Trade Book Retailing. This new report, which compiles data from proprietary surveys and additional sources to study the print and digital book retailing business, uncovers some of the nuances and contradictions of the consumer book market which include the finding that one in four adults who have used a Kindle to read an e-book in the last three months have also bought at least one book at an independent, local or used bookstore, and more than one in five have used a chain bookstore.

"While adults who use certain kinds of e-book readers are going to be more likely to stick with digital generally, we’ve found there are a lot more e-book users who still buy print books at bookstores and other channels,” said Michael Norris, senior analyst of Simba Information’s Consumer Media & Technology practice, commenting on the report. "It’s an important thing to remember as we look back on the slowing e-book market of 2012, because looking at the big picture of print and digital book retailing tells us a lot of people buy both formats from multiple sources.”

In addition to cross-tabulating Kindle and e-book users against a variety of book retailing channels, the report offers multi-year trend data on where print and digital books were purchased and how much money the consumer spent, which will allow users of the report to understand what channels heaviest-spending readers prefer. The report also tracks the extent all adults and e-book consumers acquire books from the library, retail stores other than bookstores, and more.

“Trends in Digital and Trade Book Retailing 2013” shows five-year trends of bookstore and online sales channel use as well as two-year data on where consumers are buying and downloading their e-books, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple’s iBookstore and other e-book sources.

Key demographic details and trends unique to each channel is provided in this 79-chart, 140 page report, including the gender, age, household income, education level details, purchasing habits of the buyers, what extent certain buyers purchase e-books and other data to give report purchasers a perspective on book buyers and book retailing that just isn’t available anywhere else.
