Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) today announced that it is increasing its Jan. 1 list prices of aspen-grade northern bleached hardwood kraft (NBHK) pulp for China and North America. Also it is increasing its northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp price for North America.
Al-Pac’s new aspen-grade pulp prices will be US$630/tonne in China and US$785/tonne in North America.
Al-Pac is the first North American hardwood pulp producer known to announce a Jan. 1 price hike for China. The company didn’t state the amount of the increase, but industry sources have said the current gross price of North American bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) in China is around $600/tonne.
(Several key bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp producers have announced a Jan. 1 $30/tonne price hike for China, to $700/tonne.)
Al-Pac’s new aspen pulp price for North America is the same as announced Dec. 17 by Resolute Forest Products Inc. Al-Pac didn’t state the amount of the increase, but the previous most recent aspen pulp price hike announcements for North America were to a list price of $755/tonne, made for Nov. 1 and Dec. 1, depending on the producer. Al-Pac’s announcement was for Nov. 1.
Al-Pac’s Jan. 1 NBSK price in North America will be $900/tonne. This follows announcements by several major producers, including Domtar Corp., Resolute, Mercer International Inc., and Canfor Pulp LP. The previous list price announced by NBSK producers, for Nov. 1, was $870/tonne.
Al-Pac, located in Boyle, Alberta, has a capacity of approximately 650,000 tonnes/year, of which about 90% is NBHK and the rest NBSK.
