Crews working to put out fire at Khanna Paper Mill's 70,000 tonnes/year pulp and newsprint mill in Amritsar, India, could take two to three days to fully extinguish; damage estimated at US$35.8M

LOS ANGELES , June 12, 2012 (Industry Intelligence) – Fire crews were working on putting out a blaze at Khanna Paper Mill Private Ltd.’s 70,000 tonnes per year pulp and newsprint mill in Amritsar, India, NDTV reported June 13.

Damages from the fire could reach 2 billion Indian rupees (US$35.8 million), according to estimates.

There have been no reported injuries stemming from the blaze, which broke out June 12.

The Army’s engineering wing has joined the fire services’ efforts to put out the fire, which has been reported to spread across eight acres. Approximately 45 fire engines were called to the facility.

Firefighters have not been able to reach the rapidly spreading epicenter of the fire. It could potentially take up to two or three days in order to fully extinguish the blaze, district officials said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The mill is spread across 100 acres. It was the first mill in India to export newsprint to Pakistan.
