J.D. Irving's pulp and paper mill in Saint John, New Brunswick, receives air quality approval through the Dept. of Environment and Local Government to take effect on June 1

A Class 1 air quality approval for the Irving Pulp and Paper mill, which operates in west Saint John, has been approved by the Department of Environment and Local Government. The current approval expires on May 31, the new license approval takes effect on June 1.
The approval follows a public consultation exercise which included a 120-day public review from Nov. 1, 2011 until March 26, 2012.
Irving Pulp and Paper Ltd. operates a complex that consists of a kraft pulp mill that has a production rate of about 1,000 air-dry tonnes per day, and a tissue mill that has a production rate of about 200 machine-dry tonnes per day.

The Department of Environment and Local Government is responsible for administering the Clean Air Act through early planning, pollution prevention initiatives and the administration of permits and approvals. Approvals may be amended by the department if necessary.
