According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month worth about US$40, Reuters reported March 14.
Next month, the council plans to publish a report on food waste.
An estimated 23% of eggs and an even higher percentage of produce ends up being thrown out, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Also, an estimated 30% to 50% of the food produced in the world goes uneaten, according to experts polled at this week’s Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit in Chicago.
