Wal-Mart Stores Inc. beat Target in Kantar Retail's semi-annual pricing survey, MarketWatch reported Feb. 27.
Kantar's survey found that Wal-Mart's branded basket of groceries and consumables was less expensive than Target's, and that each of seven sub-baskets of items also were less expensive.
"Suppliers will continue to feel heightened pressure to improve Walmart's internal efficiencies if not through outright efforts from Walmart to get suppliers to "match" Walmart-funded price reductions," said Leon Nicholas, a senior vice president at Kantar and contributor to the study."Walmart plans to further its downward pressure on price in an effort to widen this basket price gap."
The survey was conducted in January at Walmart and Target stores in Massachusetts.
