Londoners are recycling more than ever before and throw away less rubbish than people in other parts of England.
Household recycling has increased while the amount of rubbish going to landfill has been cut by a quarter, according to latest estimates published by the government.
The figures show that Londoners produced 12 per cent less household waste in 2010-11 than people in the next best performing English region.
In April-June 2011:
Councillor Catherine West, Chair of London Councils' Transport and Environment Committee, said:
“It's great that Londoners are recycling more and more of their rubbish. It's good for the environment and saves council tax payers money.
"London’s household waste has fallen 10 per cent in the last four years, as local authorities continue to work hard to help people reduce waste."
