According to a report by comScore Inc., a web measurement firm, one out of every six minutes online is spent social networking, Internet Retailer reported Feb. 13, 2012.
Out of every 10 users, nine of them visited a social networking site once a month or more during 2011, said the report.
Facebook Inc. alone accounted for approximately 14.6% of all online time and approximately 16% of all page views in 2011.
In December 2011, the following is a list of the average minutes per visit that were a variety of society networking sites:
• Facebook.com, 423 minutes
• Tumblr.com, 151 minutes
• Pinterest.com, 80 minutes
• Twitter.com, 25 minutes
• LinkedIn.com, 15 minutes
• MySpace.com, 13 minutes
• Google+, 5 minutes
In December 2011, Google Inc.’s fledgling Google+ social network had 20.7 million unique visitors, while Tumblr Inc.’s Tumblr.com had 18.8 million unique visitors.
Although social networking site Pinterest, which allows users to compile virtual boards of photos and links that they can share with their friends, barely had enough unique visitors to be on comScore’s radar in mid 2011, during December it had 8 million unique visitors.
Year-over-year, Facebook said that the number of ads presented on the site increased 42% in 2011, which stemmed partially from Facebook’s revamped ad format and more users joining the site.
In 2011, Facebook was the largest publisher of display ads in the U.S. and captured 27.9% of the total domestic display ad market with 1.3 trillion impressions.
In contrast, Yahoo Inc., which was the second-largest publisher of display ads in the U.S., had almost 529.0 billion impressions in 2011, while Microsoft Corp. had approximately 215.7 billion impressions.
