European cocoa use up 1.8% year-over-year in Q4 as 349,355 tonnes of cocoa beans processed, European Cocoa Assn. says; total usage up 11% to 1.435 million tonnes in 2011

– According to the European Cocoa Association, European cocoa usage during the fourth quarter of 2011 increased by 1.8% in comparison to the same time the previous year as 349,355 tonnes of beans are processed, Bloomberg reported on Jan. 13.
During the fourth quarter of 2010, 343,243 tonnes of cocoa were processed, said the ECA.
In 2011, European cocoa usage increased 6.8% to 1.435 million tonnes. According to a report by the ECA, this constitutes the highest growth rate since 2000, when cocoa usage increased by 9.6%.
The ECA surveyed a group of 24 cocoa-processing companies including Barry Callebaut AG in order to generate the information contained in the report.
