EL DORADO, Arkansas , November 15, 2011 (press release) – Anthony Forest is proud to share with you a case study from WoodWorks™ on the new El Dorado High School in Arkansas. WoodWorks™ is a trade association which provides resources that allow engineers, architects, general contractors, developers and others to build non-residential structures out of wood more easily and at less cost. Anthony Forest worked with WoodWorks™ to encourage the beneficial analysis of the wood use option for the El Dorado High School.

This is quite a milestone for the use of wood in new public schools, especially for Arkansas since the state’s Department of Education had effectively banned the use of wood frame construction in public schools through the proposed Arkansas School Facilities Manual. A massive collaborative effort spearheaded by Anthony Forest on the local and state level was successful in overturning the Department’s intentions on wood products. It was a complete team effort with Aubra Anthony, President and CEO, working with the Governor and legislative leaders and the Arkansas AIA chapter, other team members who were working directly with the local Architect and Engineer and, finally, with APA-The Engineered Wood Association, American Forest and Paper Association, WoodWorks™, and American Wood Council pushing for wood use with all the stakeholders involved.

Since the acceptance of wood frame construction, Arkansas has now built eight new schools using various wood products including dimension lumber, Anthony Power Joist®, Anthony Glulam and structural wood panels.

After Arkansas set a precedent, South Carolina school representatives who visited El Dorado, hosted by Anthony Forest, subsequently overturned their state’s ban on wood frame construction in public school facilities.

Anthony Forest will continue to battle in the trenches to allow wood frame construction in non-residential applications. If you have any questions on our process to overturn the state’s ban, please do not hesitate to call.
