Berry Plastics to close its Eastport plastic bottle factory near Richmond, Virginia, by Jan. 2, transfer production to other sites in Georgia, New Jersey; about 130 employees to be affected

EVANSVILLE, Indiana , November 7, 2011 (press release) – On October 26, 2011, Berry Plastics Corporation announced that it will close its Eastport manufacturing facility (Eastport Plant) which is located near Richmond, Virginia, by January 2, 2012. Production from the Eastport Plant will be transferred to Berry facilities in Georgia and New Jersey. The Eastport Plant is part of the Company’s Rigid Closed Top Division and produces plastic bottles for a variety of markets.

“In this uncertain economic environment, an in-depth review of our business determined this step is necessary,” said Curt Begle, President – Rigid Closed Top Division. “This action allows the Company to utilize available capacity at other Berry facilities to best streamline its operations and most efficiently serve its customers.”

There are approximately 130 employees at the Eastport Plant. The Company will work diligently to assist those interested in securing employment at other Berry plants or within the local labor market.
