KAMLOOPS, British Columbia , October 19, 2009 (press release) – CSA, the world’s largest national standard for well-managed forests belongs to Canada. Improvements to CSA’s Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Standard occurred earlier this year as part of a 5-year review cycle that keeps the standard current and relevant.

Now organizations certified to the standard are providing fresh new information about it’s use on an updated website.

“The new look to the CSASFM User Group website demonstrates our commitment and reflects our pride in adhering to this world class standard for sustainable forest management” said John Dunford, Chair of the group representing the CSA certified forest companies in Canada. “The sustainability tests demanded by the CSA SFM standard have been strengthened and it was fitting that our materials and website also improve to better communicate the effort companies are making to meet these tough requirements. ”

The CSA standard for sustainable forest management is internationally recognized for delivering on the full suite of sustainability criteria including:

- Natural forests and wildlife habitat

- Contributions to carbon uptake and storage

- Water and soil protection

- Recognition of and respect for Aboriginal rights and title

CSA is Canada’s national forest certification standard, and the world’s largest national standard accounting for over ¼ of the world’s total certified forest area. The CSA SFM standard includes a suite of mandatory core indicators for measuring sustainable forest management across the country, as well as local indicators developed through ongoing dialogue with public advisory groups. This grassroots involvement was built into the standard to reflect the Canadian context where over 94% of forests in Canada are owned by the public.

The CSA SFM User Group is a voluntary organization that represents almost 90% of the CSA forest certifications in Canada. All members of the group are committed to the practice of sustainable forestry.
