Animal Shelters Can Offer A Stray's Best Hope At A Happy Life

– Recently, I found a newborn kitten in the middle of my driveway. I had no idea what to do. The mother cat didn’t seem to be anywhere in sight (and she would never appear despite me waiting for more than four hours) and a Google search made it clear that new kittens need specialized care, so putting some food or milk into a bowl was out.
Another thing the Google search told me not to do: Take the kitten to an animal shelter. Website after website said pretty much the same thing: Take Tommy (that’s what my wife named the kitten) to a shelter and you can pretty much fill out the death certificate. But the truth was that we were ill-equipped for the situation. We didn’t have the necessary kitten supplies. We had a 7-month-old baby and we also had a senior cat with health problems who doesn’t take kindly to other cats. So despite the concerning things we were reading about animal shelters, we really didn’t have another option.
So I took the kitten to the West Valley Animal Shelter in Chatsworth, California. What I learned: Don’t believe everything you read.
From the moment I walked in the door, it was clear that the kitten would be in excellent hands. The kitten was examined immediately upon arrival and within 10 minutes (yes, that fast), a staff member was assigned to be a temporary foster to care for the kitten in these initial crucial days. I then found out a couple of days later that the kitten had been assigned to a longer-term foster home, where it would be cared for until it reached eight weeks of age and thus eligible for adoption. The longer-term home also had a large network of potential permanent homes, so the kitten would soon be placed in a loving, caring forever home.
Maybe there are animal shelters out there that are little more than kill zones. But my experience taught me that there are many shelters that give these animals their best shot at a happy, healthy life.
