United States Patent no. 8,733,369, issued on May 27, was assigned to British American Tobacco (Investments) Ltd. (London).
"Molecularly imprinted polymers selective for tobacco specific nitrosamines and methods of using the same" was invented by Anthony Rees (Furulund, Sweden), Johan Billing (Lund, Sweden) and Ecevit Yilmaz (Bjarred, Sweden).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A class of molecularly imprinted polymers that specifically recognizes and binds to TSNAs are useful, for example, in analysis and separation of TSNAs from biological fluids. Such polymers are also useful in methods of treating and manufacturing tobacco products and materials."
The patent was filed on Nov. 26, 2007, under Application No. 12/518,051.
