Pioneer Hi Bred International issued US patent for 'maize hybrid X08C971'

– United States Patent no. 8,686,249, issued on April 1, was assigned to Pioneer Hi Bred International Inc (Johnston, Iowa).
"Maize hybrid X08C971" was invented by David Walter Whitaker (Narvon, Pa.), William Andrew Wilson (Noblesville, Ind.) and Matthew David Smalley (North Mankato, Minn.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A novel maize variety designated X08C971 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof, produced by crossing Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. proprietary inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprises crossing hybrid maize variety X08C971 with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X08C971 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. This invention relates to the maize variety X08C971, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X08C971. This invention further relates to methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X08C971."
The patent was filed on Feb. 15, 2012, under Application No. 13/396,630.
