The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a $4,894 penalty to Stimson Lumber for stormwater permit violations at its sawmill at 865 Stimson Mill Road in Clatskanie , Ore .
DEQ requires the company to sample, analyze and report on its stor mwater discharges to ensure that discharges meet water quality benchmarks in its stormwater permit. The stormwater permit requires facilities in the wood products industry, including sawmills, to monitor chemical oxygen demand to indirectly measure the amount of organic compounds in water. DEQ issued this penalty because stormwater monitoring information is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the company’s stormwater management practices. Good stormwater management prevent s environmental harm. Stimson Lumber has until Oct. 29 to appeal the penalty. DEQ enforces Oregon environmental laws to protect people’s health and to keep our region’s air, land, and water clean and healthy. These compliance and enforcement efforts also help level the playing field b y deterring violators who might otherwise have an unfair business advantage over their environ mentally compliant competitors. For more information about DEQ - issued penalties across Oregon and other information about DEQ’s compliance and enforcement, pleas e see the DEQ Office of Compliance and Enforcement web page.
The company failed to conduct required stormwater monitoring for pollutants that can potentially cause harm to rivers and streams .
