French coated woodfree papers have higher prices in April and May, amid increased pulp prices and other cost concerns; but uncoated woodfree paper producers are under pressure to lower prices, Euwid reported May 23.

While coated woodfree paper producers have been successful in raising prices, saying it was absolutely necessary, coated sheets are seeing a lower price increase than coated reel papers, according to sources.

Lower demand and overcapacity in France, however, was seen in April as shipments for coated woodfree sheets fell year-over-year by a high single-digit percentage and coated woodfree reels fell year-over-year by double digits.

Some producers believe it is important to maintain capacity utilization rates, while others believe their competitors are compromising too much on price for the purpose of keeping their machines operating, reported Euwid.
