PEORIA, Illinois , May 22, 2013 (press release) – Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) the global leader in power generation, today introduced the next generation Cat® XQ2000 Power Module, which combines world-class durability and reliability with industry-leading fuel economy. The combination of proven Cat components with cutting-edge technologies makes the Cat XQ2000 Power Module the industry's leading portable power solution.

"Being a vertically integrated manufacturer enables us to produce highly efficient products that benefit customers looking for the lowest total owning and operating costs," said Brian Kruse, Global Rental Power product manager.

The Cat 3516B is the core engine platform for the next generation XQ2000. With thousands of applications worldwide and millions of operating hours, the 3516B offers proven performance, long life and maximum up time, while providing market-leading fuel economy.

The new XQ2000 incorporates a variable frequency drive and high efficiency fan to improve mechanical efficiency. With these improvements the fan draws 40 percent less load on the engine at 100 percent generator set load. This decreased parasitic load delivers up to 8 percent improved fuel economy over the previous generation.

In addition to improved fuel efficiency, the next generation XQ2000 provides significant power density advantages. Caterpillar developed new exhaust stacks that reduce spacing requirements for sites requiring multiple units. This allows for an increase of 47 percent on-site power density over the previous capabilities. With a target of less than 4°C (8°F) temperature rise across the site, the new layout design allows a 1.53 kW per square foot power density at the continuous rating in 60 Hz, and 1.34 kW per square foot in 50 Hz.

The next generation XQ2000's control system has been substantially enhanced as well. The plant control system has been simplified with less than half of the wiring required for communication between interconnected modules. It also features plant control programming and simulation, allowing complete system testing prior to generator set startup. This allows parallel commissioning operations (electrical, mechanical, and plant protection) to occur simultaneously, versus testing individual systems in succession. These two features can significantly reduce installation and start up time.

The next generation XQ2000 control system provides for total site operation and monitoring from a local control room, using TCP/IP protocol, or from any remote site via the internet. This greatly reduces on-site manpower support requirements, minimizes operator exposure to hazards and permits site performance and maintenance data to be viewed, archived and analyzed for maximum site performance. Whether needed in a stand-alone environment, combined with dozens of units in a power plant solution or supporting utility systems worldwide, the powerful controls allow for a full range of paralleling, load share and load shed solutions.

Improved serviceability and increased uptime were identified as critical requirements for this product during the voice of customer data collection process. To achieve this, intense engineering was utilized to maximize the system-level integration and automation. For example, the Cat control system actively monitors every service filter's status, allowing for remote notification of condition-based filter maintenance requirements, rather than relying on set service intervals or past experience.

Customers will also be able to rely upon the world-class product support and parts availability provided by the network of Cat dealers worldwide. These dealers have access to a variety of remanufactured components with same-as-new performance and reliability at a fraction of the cost. All this enables our customers to have the right part at the right time, resulting in increased maintenance savings and best-in-class up time.

The next generation XQ2000 is currently available through Cat Rental Power dealers and designated International Power Project (IPP) providers to meet short- or long-term power demands. In total, the IPP providers own in excess of 3 GW of portable power to meet the needs of customers around the globe.
