NEW YORK , January 10, 2013 (press release) – Hearst Newspapers announced today that Michael Distelhorst has been named publisher of the Midland Reporter-Telegram and Plainview Daily Herald. The announcement was made by Hearst Newspapers President Mark Aldam and Hearst Community Newspapers Group Publisher Lucy Talley.

Distelhorst will have responsibility for the business and operating performance of Hearst’s West Texas Community Newspapers, including the Midland Reporter-Telegram, Plainview Daily Herald, Canyon News and Muleshoe Journal. Distelhorst replaces David Wedel, who has assumed new responsibilities as director of accounting for Hearst Newspapers, based in San Antonio.

“Mike’s experience transforming traditional newspaper environments into profitable print and digital sales organizations will bring exciting opportunities for our West Texas papers,” Aldam said. “His sales and marketing experience will greatly help us boost digital advertising revenue and improve customers’ experience with the Reporter-Telegram and Daily Herald.”

Distelhorst joins Hearst from the Amarillo Globe-News, where he served as vice president of advertising and revenue development since 2008. Prior to that, he was the general manager of Southwest Marketing Partners from 2007 to 2008, and the publisher of Swift Communications’ niche publications from 2006 to 2007. Earlier in his career, he served as associate publisher/advertising director of the Greeley Tribune and advertising director at The Hutchinson News.

“Mike has great energy and plenty of hands-on media leadership that will be a strong asset at Hearst,” Talley said. “I look forward to working with him to secure the future success of our West Texas outlets—in print and across digital platforms.”
