LOS ANGELES , January 9, 2013 () – Government officals in Rhode Island are proceeding with a study that is looking to boost recycling for packaging materials, including plastic bags, The Associated Press reported Jan. 9.

The state's Senate has created a special commission to look at the topic, and the group is meeting Jan. 9 to hear presentations from members of the packaging, grocery, and waste industries, according to the report.

The commission is drawing up recommendations aimed at encouraging manufacturers to reduce, reuse or recycle packaging materials in order to cut the amount sent to that state's primary landfill.

The group is expected to submit the recommendations to the Senate by March.
