Suzano in Brazil announces Jan. 1 eucalyptus pulp price increases, up US$20/tonne to US$850/tonne in North America, US$20/tonne to US$800/tonne in Europe, US$30/tonne in China, to US$700/tonne

LOS ANGELES , December 4, 2012 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) – Brazilian bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP) producer Suzano Papel e Celulose SA has announced Jan. 1 US$20-$30/tonne price increases, a knowledgeable source confirmed.

Its new prices are as follows:
•$850/tonne in North America, up $20/tonne
•$800/tonne in Europe, up $20/tonne
•$700/tonne in China, up $30/tonne

This is the first known pulp price announcement for Jan. 1.

Suzano also led the most recent global BEKP announcement, a $30/tonne increase effective Oct. 1, to $830/tonne for North America, $780/tonne for Europe, and $670/tonne for China, which was followed by other major producers.

Global BEKP prices have been increasing since then, but as of the end of November, they had not yet fully reached these announced levels. Producers are targeting full implementation of those levels during December.

Suzano said on its website that in 2011, it sold 1.8 million tonnes of pulp, with 31% going to Europe, 36% to Asia, 2% to South/Central America, 20% to Brazil, and 11% to North America. The company said it is the second largest producer of eucalyptus pulp in the world and among the eight largest producers of market pulp.
