– Metsä Fibre Oy in Finland has announced September northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp prices for China.
According to a press release, the company’s new prices are US$640/tonne for commodity grade and $650/tonne for reinforcing grade.
In its announcement, which was made Sept. 3, Metsä Fibre did not specify its previous prices.
Metsä Fibre’s new price levels are the same as stated last week by Canfor Pulp LP for reinforcing grade NBSK and Mercer International Inc. for commodity grade NBSK, both up $20/tonne.
The pulp grades of Metsä Fibre Oy, formerly known as Oy Metsä-Botnia Ab, are Botnia Nordic Pine (softwood pulp), Botnia Nordic Strong (reinforcement pulp), and Botnia Nordic Birch (hardwood pulp). Metsä Fibre is a subsidiary of Metsä Group.
According to the company’s 2011 annual report, its four mills, in Äänekoski, Joutseno, Kemi, and Rauma, all in Finland, produced 2,205,077 tonnes during the year. Capacity of all four is 2.410 million tonnes, according to the company website.
As noted in Metsa Group’s Aug. 2 interim report for Jan. 30-June 2012, the company’s sales volume of pulp in the first half of the year increased by 5% year-on-year, amounting to 1,109,000 tonnes.
Also as noted in the interim report, Itochu Corp. acquired a 24.9% strategic stake in Metsä Fibre in April, which also involved a renewal of the agreement of Itochu’s sales agent position in selling Metsä Fibre’s long fiber pulp in Asia and of Metsä Fibre’s sales agent position in selling Itochu’s short-fiber pulp in Europe. Under the agreement, Metsä Fibre will sell 500,000 tonnes of pulp to Asia and Itochu 150,000 tonnes of pulp to Europe annually.
