The Northeast Biomass Working Group (NEBWG) has released its draft recommendations on bulk wood pellet delivery and transportation standards and is seeking feedback from stakeholders until Oct. 1, reported Biomass Magazine on Aug. 27.

The Wood Pellets Quality and Safety Assurance for Transportation and Delivery document is presented as a set of technical recommendations intended to lead to standards for bulk pellet delivery from the manufacturer to the end-user’s storage facility.

It is not meant to replace the Pellet Fuel Institute standards, upon which the industry relies. The ultimate goal is to help improve the market for bulk pellet fuel delivery, according to the NEBWG, Biomass Magazine reported.

Final standards would only be set after a significant period of industry use, review, comment and revision, according to the NEBWG. The recommendations could be used for agricultural pellets when a similar standard exists, stated the NEBWG.

In a process that began early this year, many who rely on wood pellet distribution participated in writing up the recommendations, noted the NEBWG. The intention is to have a standard that is common and universal, reported Biomass Magazine.
