Disley Tissue receives approval to add 220 tonnes/day wood pulp mill to its Stockport, England, facility with current capacity of 24,500 tonnes/year of recycled tissue paper and 33,000 tonnes/year of de-inked pulp; new mill to create 50 jobs

SANDBACH, England , March 5, 2012 (press release) – The Council’s strategic planning board (Wednesday, February 29) approved plans to expand the Waterside Road company and add a 220-tonne a day wood pulp mill to its existing 70-tonne recycled paper based mill.

Built in the early 19th century, the former cotton mill converted to a paper mill in 1890 and now makes high-quality paper with a low carbon footprint from sustainable raw materials.

A number of unused buildings will be demolished as part of the development and there will be an extension of the stock preparation area, new fibre and waste storage areas, a new paper mill building and two storeys of offices.

Councillor Harold Davenport, chairman of Cheshire East’s strategic planning board, said: “This development is a significant business opportunity for both Disley Tissue and Cheshire East.

“The strategic planning board felt that this investment into pulp paper-making will diversify the current waste paper operation and help secure the future of the existing business.

“These factors, coupled with the creation of 50 new skilled jobs, will bring substantial benefits to the area.”

Disley Tissue Ltd is currently capable of producing 24,500 tonnes of recycled tissue paper and 33,000 tonnes of de-inked pulp made from waste paper per year.

“From an economic growth perspective, I am delighted that this development has been approved by the strategic planning board and I look forward to witnessing the benefits from this expansion.”
