Holmen Paper AG recently received permission from the land and environment court to build a biogas plant at its Hallsta paper mill in Hallstavik, Sweden, reported Norrtelje Tidning on Feb. 15.
The project is still in the planning stage, which is determining the size and its economic viability, said Hans Kjällvander, the project manager. The design is expected to be completed by spring.
The license received would allow the Swedish papermaker to build a biogas plant to produce up to 6 million cubic meters a year. The biogas would be sold mostly as a transport fuel, Norrtelje Tidning reported.
The plant would be built north of the Hallsta mill but would be an integral part of the papermaking operation as biogas would be produced via anaerobic digestion tied to wastepaper processing at the mill.
The plant’s location in an area set aside for industrial use will not require any changes to the plan. Holmen began considering biogas production a few years ago, reported Norrtelje Tidning.
The Hallsta mill has the capacity to produce 670,000 tonnes per year of machine-finished magazine, supercalendered paper, book paper and newsprint, according to Holmen’s website.
