Startup Stacked Wines offers premium wines in four-packs of individually-sealed, stem-less PET glasses stacked on top of each other, expects to launch in major California retail chain in March

Stacked Wines LLC, a startup company based in Newport Beach, California, has developed a novel way to package premium wines in individual serving-size containers that are intended to be more sophisticated than a beer can, reported The Orange County Register on Jan. 20.

The company, which was founded by three former University of California (UC) at Irvine students, offers a merlot and a chardonnay in four-packs of individually-sealed, stem-less polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glasses stacked on top of each other.

The four-pack sells for US$15 and has the volume equivalent of a regular bottle of wine, as the four servings combined are 750 milliliters. The four pack can be held right side up or upside down without coming apart or leaking.

The company aims for its product to appeal to people on picnics and hikes or at parties, the Register reported.

The individual containers, called Vinoware, are shatterproof and lightweight, and were designed by engineers to look and feel like a wine glass, according to Stacked’s website.

The new packaging is attempting to “do for wine what the can did for the beer industry,” said Jodi Wynn, one of Stacked’s three co-founders, all of which earned their MBA at UC Irvine.

The other two co-founders are Matt Zimmer and Doug Allan. Zimmer, who earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Univ. of Michigan, created the stacked packaging concept. Allan, who is an alumnus of the Cornell Hotel School, has knowledge of the wine industry.

The company, which is only licensed to sell in California now and offers its stacks online, is expected to launch in a major retail chain in March.
