Argentina's corn crops experiencing dry weather in major growing areas, but still 'too soon' to discuss potential losses, industry insider says; country harvested 21.6 million tonnes of corn this year

LOS ANGELES , December 29, 2011 (Industry Intelligence) – Argentine corn growers say crops in the major growing areas of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe are experiencing dryness, but it’s “too soon” to discuss potential losses, Bloomberg reported Dec. 29.

Corn plantings in Buenos Aires and Santa Fe are at the vegetative state and can withstand the lack of humidity, so there is still optimism, according to Martin Fraguio, executive director of the Maizar corn association.

Corn crops in the two provinces account for the nearly half of Argentina’s output and are set to enter the critical flowering stage in mid-January, Fraguio said.

The country harvested 21.6 million tonnes of corn this year, and is likely to harvest more corn next year due to an increase in area and yields, Fraguio said.
