Worldwide Plastics Co. has agreed to form and sell 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) product packaging from Thailand’s Royal Interpack Co. Ltd., in North America, reported The Packer on Nov. 14.
The extruded rPET will be imported from Royal Interpack’s extrusion operation in Chonburi, Thailand, and formed at a plant to be located in the Los Angeles area, said Vincent Mery, president of Worldwide Plastics, which is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
By December, the building will be located by Royal Interpack; the machines are being supplied by Worldwide Plastics, he said, noting that the plant should be up and running by March or April next year.
In the meantime, Worldwide Plastics is importing the formed packaging from Thailand, said Mery, The Packer reported.
Extrusion opportunities in the U.S. and Canada could develop in the future, he said, indicating that possible sites for expansion would include southern Texas, Ontario and British Columbia.
Trays to be produced under the agreement will be made from recycled PET bottles, which the company collects for recycling, “taking every bottle we can get our hands on,” said Mery.
Worldwide Plastics makes stock and custom-designed plastic and pulp containers for food suppliers, including produce growers, shippers and repackers, representing a wide variety of fruit and vegetable commodities, he said, reported The Packer.
