NICHOLASVILLE, Kentucky , November 7, 2011 (press release) – Jessamine County Schools officials say they've seen a sharp drop in the number of students carrying tobacco since a strong enforcement program began.

School Superintendent Lu Young said school resource officers are citing underage students caught with tobacco into Juvenile Court. In front of the judge, offenders can be fined up to $150, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Young said students who are 18 years old can't be sent to court, but face administrative punishment.

The stepped-up enforcement of state statute is under way at both of the Jessamine County high schools and has driven down the number of students caught with tobacco. There were 120 incidents at East Jessamine High School in 2008-09, but only 39 last school year.

Court fines do not come to the school system.
