RockTenn Co. has told state and local officials that it plans to close the former Smurfit-Stone Container plant at the Martinsville Industrial Park in Henry County. About 100 employees will be affected by the closure.
Martinsville City Manager Clarence Monday told The Martinsville Bulletin that he received a letter from the company on Thursday detailing the closure.
The letter says the plant will cease operations and terminate all employees on or after Dec. 24.
RockTenn manufactures corrugated and consumer packaging and recycling solutions.
Monday said he was told by a company official that the closure does not affect other RockTenn plants. RockTenn also has a plant in Ridgeway.
The city of Martinsville's jobless rate remained the highest in Virginia in August. The Virginia Employment Commission says the city's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 19.4 percent, up from 17.1 percent in July and 19.1 percent last August.
The statewide rate for August was 6.5 percent.
