BENWOOD, West Virginia , October 18, 2011 () – Worker killed in accident at Consol Energy mine in West Virginia

A worker is dead after an accident at a Consol Energy Inc. coal mine in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle.

The state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training says the accident occurred at 8 p.m. Monday in Marshall County.

Spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater says the accident occurred at Consol Energy's Shoemaker Mine. She says no further details on the accident are immediately available.

Consol spokeswoman Lynn Seay said in a statement to media outlets that the accident occurred on the surface and the company has idled the facility. Seay says Consol is working with state and federal mine safety officials to determine the cause of the accident.
