LOS ANGELES , October 4, 2011 () – The grain harvest in Russia may jump 53% year-over-year to reach 93 million tonnes after drying and cleaning this year, provided the weather is favorable, according to the country’s Grain Union, Bloomberg reported Oct. 3.

The country’s wheat crop is estimated at 55 million tonnes, with around 60% of milling quality, while the feed barley harvest is projected to fall between 16 million and 17 million tonnes this year, Grain Union president Arkady Zlochevsky said at a news conference Oct. 3.

The harvest this year is projected to hit a record for crops including sunflower seeds with 9 million to 10 million tonnes, corn with 6 million tonnes, rice with more than 1.2 million tonnes, and soybeans with more than 900,000 tonnes, according to Zlochevsky.

The grain crop dropped 37% due to drought last year, reaching 60.9 million tonnes, including 41.46 million tonnes of wheat, 8.32 million tonnes of barley, 5.34 million tonnes of sunflower seeds, 3 million tonnes of corn, and 1.06 million tonnes of rice, according to Rosstat, the Federal State Statistics Service.

Nearly 70 million tonnes of grain will be used domestically, while around 25 million tonnes will be shipped, Zlochevsky said. An additional 5 million tonnes is available, but shipments will be limited because of transportation costs and infrastructure capacity, Zlochevsky added.

Farmers in Russia have started winter planting, with around 17 million hectares (42 million acres) of grains to be planted in 2011, Zlochevsky said.
