ITTO plans Oct. 28 symposium in Japan to mark UN's International Year of Forests, commemorate 25 years of tropical timber group's work

LOS ANGELES , September 29, 2011 (Forestweb) – The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) is planning a public symposium in Yokohama, Japan, on Oct. 28 to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary this year.

ITTO said in an industry circular that it also intends the event to promote awareness of forest issues, highlight the United Nations (UN) International Year of Forests, and to draw attention to its work toward sustainability of tropical forests.

The scheduled keynote speaker is author C.W. Nicol, member of Japan's committee for the UN Year of Forests, ITTO said.

An afternoon symposium, on tropical forests and ITTO, will include presentations on such topics as climate change and Reducing Environmental Degradation and Deforestation (REDD+), and assessing forest management in the tropics.

ITTO is an intergovernmental organization promoting the conservation and sustainable management and trade in tropical forests resources, and was established by the UN in 1986, according to its website.
