BOSTON , September 12, 2011 (press release) – The Boston Globe today launched BostonGlobe.com, a new Web site providing a wide range of authoritative news, analysis and opinion on issues and topics including politics, sports, arts, education and business, all from the Globe's award-winning journalists.

BostonGlobe.com will be the only site that provides access to the full range and depth of the Globe's journalism, along with offering video, photo galleries and breaking news throughout the day, all in an elegantly-designed format, optimized for reading on a tablet, smartphone, laptop or desktop.

"BostonGlobe.com provides a wide array of news and information for digital consumers and a coveted audience for advertisers," said Christopher M. Mayer, publisher of The Boston Globe. "Our research showed that we have different segments of news consumers in our market, and we need to reach them in different ways. We are also providing advertisers a new opportunity to connect with a premier reader base in an uncluttered and innovative new format."

Home-delivery print subscribers will receive unlimited free access to BostonGlobe.com. As part of the launch, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage New England is sponsoring a free trial subscription for all readers now through Sept. 30, 2011.

Starting Oct. 1, BostonGlobe.com will be $3.99 per week for a digital-only subscription. The new site will appeal to readers who are drawn to the Globe's quality journalism, an immersive reading experience and the feel of a newspaper or magazine presentation, but on a digital device. Its design is clean, bold and elegant creating a more enjoyable experience for a deeper reading of the news.

BostonGlobe.com launches alongside New England's largest destination news and information site, Boston.com, which will remain free to consumers. Already attracting an average audience of more than six million unique visitors a month, Boston.com will continue to appeal to those looking for a wide-ranging online experience that will include breaking news and sports coverage, local deals, online classifieds, community conversations and a limited number of Globe stories. In addition, there will be new blogs on popular topics such as food, local music, health, nutrition and travel.

The site is being launched in an HTML5-based version, employing the latest technologies and capabilities, which will work seamlessly across all platforms whether the screen is hand-held or desktop size. Using a new technical feature known as responsive design, it will automatically adjust the page layout for each platform to provide the best viewing experience.

A subscription to BostonGlobe.com will allow readers access to the complete BostonGlobe.com experience on all of their computers and mobile devices with access to an Internet browser. In addition, a new customer loyalty program, Boston Globe Insiders, which starts on October 1, 2011, is designed to provide tremendous value and unique experiences for subscribers, both print and digital, and will include access to special events, exclusive merchandise offers, and opportunities to connect with Boston Globe reporters, columnists and editors.

"This new site will provide access to the full range and depth of work from the region's largest newsroom, with its comprehensive news and sports coverage, sharp analysis, vigorous investigative reporting, and vast array of information about local entertainment and community events," said Martin Baron, editor of the Globe. "In addition to containing everything in the Globe, the site will be highly dynamic, with up-to-the-minute reports and additional features that deepen readers' understanding of the news."

One of the unique innovations on BostonGlobe.com is the My Saved feature, where subscribers can quickly and easily select Globe articles to save and read later whether they are online or offline. The My Saved feature travels across readers' different devices.
