Ontario grants C$1.9M energy rebate to Flakeboard's Sault Ste. Marie plant for 2010-2011, pledges further C$6.4M over three years

LOS ANGELES , August 24, 2011 (Forestweb) – Flakeboard is one of three companies in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, that will receive energy rebates from the provincial government of C$0.02 per kilowatt-hour.

The other companies are Essar Steel Algoma Inc. and St. Marys Paper Corp., the provincial government said in an Aug. 23 release.

In the fiscal year 2010-2011, the province provided a retroactive rebate to Flakeboard of C$1.9 million. The government says the company will be eligible for future rebates under the three-year Northern Industrial Electricity Rate (NIER) program, which typically decreases energy costs by 25%.

Over the next three years, the NIER program is expected to provide $6.4 million in rebates to Flakeboard.

Mike Rosso, Northern regional director at Flakeboard, said the company was very appreciative of the government's recognition that businesses in Northern Ontario are significantly challenged.

Rosso added that the program would provide the necessary support for the Sault Ste. Marie facility to pursue energy conservation initiatives that would otherwise be very difficult to implement. He said the program requires an Energy Management Plan showing measurable gains in energy conservation that will help support the long-term viability of the operation.
