GRAND FORKS, British Columbia , August 8, 2011 () – It appears as if International Forest Products Ltd. (Interfor) won't be building a co-generational power plant at its facility in Grand Forks.

According to a release on its website, Interfor said that it was notified on Aug. 2 by BC Hydro that its plan was unsuccessful.

Last year, Interfor had announced a proposal that included the construction of a 20-MW power plant at the Grand Forks site; the proposal was for Hydro's Phase 2 power call.

The plant would have used heat to generate electricity (with wood waste being used as fuel) and it could've provided power to the grid.

In late-January, Interfor’s VP and Chief Forester Ric Slaco told The Gazette that its co-gen plan had been shortlisted by Hydro.

The company had also announced plans to modernize the mill last year and according to the release, it would still be reviewing that option – a decision on the mill upgrade is expected to be made later this year.

More in the Aug. 10 edition of the Grand Forks Gazette.
